Spatial implications of the new towns – Seoul’s growth as a metropolitan area

At the same time as adding to the housing supply, Bundang and Ilsan received much attention as Korea’s first suburban new towns, and for having the significant implication of physically expanding the boundary of Seoul’s property market with their immense apartment complexes. In fact, there were a total of five new towns built as part of the TMHCP (Figure 4.2). Bundang and Ilsan differed from the other three new towns in that they were built on the scale of a city and stood on their own. They were not attached to the nearby cities or towns, but were more connected to Seoul. The other three new towns were built on a much smaller scale, each adjacent to an existing city center, focusing on providing housing for the host city. Hence, Joongdong, Pyungchon, and Sanbon were “new towns in town,” and they resembled more a new housing cluster within an existing city. Because of the differences, Bundang and Ilsan attracted much more public interest, and the government also used them to display its concern for Seoul’s housing problems.
